I recently participated in Cumberland's "Mountain Maryland Plein Air." It was the 10th year of the competition, located in Allegany and Garrett counties. We had an amazing group of 29 artists who had been selected by our juror, Vladislav Yeliseyev. I was thrilled to receive the third place award for my work, "Tuesday Downpour."

My paintings are loosely realistic, composed of color or value fields and marks. I work toward a painting that can be appreciated both for its abstract elements and overall impression. Each painting contains a spark for me: the 'why' of the painting--such as a particular quality of light or a dynamic pattern of shadows, settling fog, or vibrant, sparkling water. Whatever elements initially strike me become the critical aspect of that plein air painting. I enjoy working outdoors and am inspired by the quality of light and the differences in that quality of light based on the location.
